I am an experienced Director and D.o.P, based in Bucharest/ Romania.
As a teenager, I was fascinated by my father’s work as a ‘black and white’ photographer, by the meticulous weighing and combining (using a tiny scale like in a pharmacy) of the the chemicals needed to prepare the developing subtances and, of course, the dark room where the real magic happened and the lights and shapes he captured got printed onto paper.
I had started to take my own photos a bit later and I developed an attraction for working with light, improvising with light bulbs, candles, mirrors and magnifiers.
In 1990 I entered the Romanian State Film School (UNATC Bucharest), which I graduated in 1994. I have started working as Director of Photography, having the opportunity to collaborate with Romanian Cannes Awards directors, and also with many others, Romanian or foreign.
After being on set for films and TVCs for more than 15 years, I have realised that I am also attracted in storytelling using the emotion created by the actors, so I became very interested in directing the actors’ performance. I think that the filmmaker’s life interactions (and his personal experiences), corroborated with a solid cinema storytelling background teach him or her how to “feel” the actors’ play to suit the story, and how to improve it on set. So I started to work as a TVC director, and I am also drawn in to tell stories through film.
The story nuggets in the TVCs have contributed to my wish to expand in storytelling and, at present time, I have a full script for a short film which I am looking forward to make. I hope I will soon have the funds to make my own film magic happen on screen.
