It’s been a little over a year since Google released its open-source AI tool, Dall-E, and the platform has come a long way in terms of functionality and user adoption. While the tool is still far from perfect, it has shown immense potential in its ability to generate realistic images. Let’s make a short case study and check what it could mean for our industry.
In the past year, Dall-E has been used by a number of photographers and videographers to create stunning visual content as it’s able to generate realistic images with impressive accuracy. To use Dall-e, you simply provide it with an image or textual description, and it will generate a new image based on that. For example, if you provide it with a picture of a burger, it will generate a new picture of a burger with different toppings, or a different type of bun.
To try this we borrow a burger picture from Malwina Wachulec, a polish food stylist, this is an original image:

And these are the images generated by AI based on it:

Now let’s freestyle more and check a text to image option:

This is what we get today, but there is no question that AI is rapidly evolving and growing more sophisticated every day. Let’s try some classic tabletop chocolate shots.

To dive deeper we’ve asked the OpenAI for some of AI potential future uses in the visual art and film industry, and this is what we got:
- Image creation: generating realistic images from scratch, pp-scaling low-resolution images, colorizing black and white images, detecting and removing image defects
- Generating realistic 3D models: AI can be used to generate realistic 3D models of people, objects, and scenes. This can be used for movies, video games, and other visual media.
- Enhancing or creating visuals: AI can be used to enhance or create visuals for movies, video games, and other visual media. This can be used to create realistic effects or to create completely new visuals.
- Composing music: AI can be used to compose music for movies, video games, and other visual media. This can be used to create original scores or to enhance existing music.
- Generating dialogue: AI can be used to generate dialogue for movies, video games, and other visual media. This can be used to create realistic conversations or to create completely new dialogue.
- Writing scripts: AI can be used to write scripts for movies, video games, and other visual media. This can be used to create original stories or to enhance existing stories.
- Creating characters: AI can be used to create characters for movies, video games, and other visual media. This can be used to create original characters or to enhance existing characters.
- Designing sets: AI can be used to design sets for movies, video games, and other visual media. This can be used to create original sets or to enhance existing sets.
- Generating effects: AI can be used to generate effects for movies, video games, and other visual media. This can be used to create realistic effects or to create completely new effects. 10. Producing animation: AI can be used to produce animation for movies, video games, and other visual media. This can be used to create original animations or to enhance existing animations.
- Creating visual effects: AI can be used to create visual effects for movies, video games, and other visual media. This can be used to create realistic effects or to create completely new effects.
Following that we asked AI for a script for a tea commercial. It took several seconds, here it is:
KITCHEN – DAY
We see a lady busy in the kitchen, preparing a meal. She is busy cooking when she hears the sound of a kettle boiling. She walks over to the kettle and pours herself a cup of tea. As she takes a sip of her tea, she suddenly hears a voice.
VOICE: Hey, can I have some of that?
The lady is surprised to see a talking teabag in her cup. She looks around to see if anyone else is in the kitchen with her.
LADY: Um, excuse me?
TEABAG: Yeah, can I have some of that? Your tea looks really good.
The lady is still surprised and a little confused.
LADY: Um, sure. I guess you can have some of my tea.
The lady takes the teabag out of her cup and puts it in a new cup of hot water. As the teabag steeps, the voice speaks again.
TEABAG: That’s much better. Thank you!
The lady is now beginning to enjoy the company of the talking teabag.
LADY: You’re welcome. It’s nice to have someone to talk to.
TEABAG: Yes, it is. I’m glad we can share a cup of tea together.
All right. Should we ask AI for some sample storyboards?

How can creators apply this to everyday work? Some may wish to use the images as is, while others may manipulate or alter them in some way to suit their needs or aesthetic. Additionally, the images could be used as a starting point or inspiration for further creative endeavors. The future of AI may be shrouded in potential but also fraught with uncertainty. However, one thing is certain: AI is here to stay and its impact on the creative sector will only become more pronounced in the years to come.
As technology advances, more and more tasks that were once performed by human beings will be carried out by machines. One such task is writing articles. We gave it a try as well… and apart from some editing, this whole article was 99% written by the AI.
